Academic year - semesters of study, teaching of courses
Undergraduate studies at the Department of Mathematics last four (4) years or, equivalently, eight (8) semesters. The academic year begins on September 1 of each calendar year and ends on August 31 of the following year. The educational work of each academic year is developed in two teaching semesters, the winter and the spring. Each semester includes 13 weeks for teaching and 3 weeks for exams.
The detailed calendar for the current academic year, with the start and end dates of the semesters as well as the holidays, can be found here.here.

The teaching of courses, tutorials and laboratory training takes place during working days, from Monday to Friday, according to the course timetable established by theannounced by the Secretariat. The presence of students in the lectures and other educational activities, although not mandatory, is strongly recommended. The teaching time is defined as the first 45 minutes of each class hour. The starting time of the classes is a quarter after the time indicated in the schedule. e.g. if a class appears in the schedule 09:00-10:00, the actual teaching is 09:15-10:00.

Distribution of Courses in Semesters of Study
The Undergraduate Studies Program provides for the teaching of four (4) to five (5) courses per semester, corresponding to twenty (20) to twenty-six (26) teaching hours per week, including tutorial and/or laboratory hours. Each semester has thirty (30) out of the two hundred and forty (240) ECTS credits required in total for the student to become a Bachelor of Mathematics. Despite the fact that the sequence of courses in the approved curriculum is indicative, and a student is free to reform it as he wishes, the department considers it unwise to have significant changes from theproposed indicative curriculum. The syllabus covered by advanced semester courses, as well as their teaching method, is based on the assumption that the student has understood the content of the courses of the previous semesters.

Registration Renewal
At the beginning of each academic semester, and within the exclusive deadline announced by the Secretariat, all undergraduate students, regardless of year of study, are required to renew their registration (in the semester following their initial registration in the department). Students register electronically through the department's electronic services (e-Secretariat).

Students who do not proceed with a Registration Renewal Declaration in a given semester cannot receive a Certificate of Attendance or submit the Course Declaration for that specific semester.

Choosing a Field of Study
BEFORE the declaration of courses of 4thsemester, students must choose the direction they will follow in the continuation of their studies. This choice is indicative and not binding. If, over the course of the year, the student changes his mind for any reason, he has the right, in the last semester of his studies, to request a change in his initial declaration by applying to the department assembly and choose another direction of studies (with which he will complete his studies).

Attention: after the (initial) choice of direction, the Electronic Secretariat optimizes, individually for each student, and for the entire continuation of his studies, the course choices, with this information as the exclusive criterion. Therefore, in case of future withdrawal regarding the direction, the student also undertakes the obligation to readjust the personal declaration/course selection plan in order to meet the requirements of the (new) direction in which he is interested in completing his studies.

Course Statements
The student, in each academic semester, is obliged to choose the courses of his preference, by submitting a relevant declaration. For all students with an admission year of 2000-01 and later, the Declaration of Courses is only done electronically within deadlines announced by the Secretariat.

The selection/declaration of courses is valid only for the academic semester in which it is made, and by extension for one-and-only-academic year. Modifications and sending of declarations can be made within the time limit for submitting declarations, which has been announced. The final declaration is considered to be the one that has been formed and registered in the system up to the deadline for declarations. If a student does not submit a Declaration of Courses, then he/she cannot take textbooks, nor take part in the semester exams and the September retake exam (the declaration of courses to be examined for the September exam is automatic and includes all courses that do not have a passable grade from the winter and spring semester declarations).

For the 8 semesters of regular study, each course declaration must include courses with a total weight of at least 30 ECTS units. The student is free, in each semester, within the total number of courses he/she will choose, to declare courses from any semester, as long as they are taught in the corresponding period (winter or spring). In the total number of courses declared, the student may also include courses from previous semesters in the exams of which he/she has failed (attention: there are procedural rules).

For most core courses, the division of the audience into smaller sections is envisaged, with as equal a number of students as possible, with the same learning objectives and with uniform teaching material for each course. Students who belong to the same semester as the declared core course are assigned to the sections by the Secretariat, based on their last name. Students who belong to a higher semester of studies than that of the declared core course, determine the section of their preference.

The Department of Mathematics proposes a specific, scientifically correct, time sequence for registering courses, the observance of which contributes significantly to the education, the acquisition of difficult knowledge, and the grade performance of students. Of course, the distribution of courses over the semesters is considered indicative and there is no prerequisite for successfully passing a course in order to attend another: students have the flexibility to choose a course other than that indicated in the indicative curriculum.

Selection of Books
Each student is provided with free textbooks for each course only when they register for the first time. The number of textbooks each student is entitled to is equal to the number of courses they are required to choose for successful attendance to obtain the degree, i.e. 36. The registration of textbooks is done electronically through the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs on the website"Eudoxus"The website contains information abouttextbooks selected by the Department of Mathematicsfor all courses offered in the current academic year. This is where students select/declare their textbooks, within specific deadlines set by the Ministry of Education and Science (announced by the Secretariat each academic semester).

Examination Procedure
The exact method of evaluation of each course is determined by its instructor, and, in principle, is based on written final exams. The exams are held at the end of each academic semester (January/February and June). In case of failure or non-participation in them, the student may be examined in September. In the examination periods at the end of the winter and spring semesters, only the courses taught during the respective semesters are examined. In the September re-examination period, all courses are examined, regardless of the semester in which they have been taught. The exam score is announced within 20 days from the day of the exam and is expressed on a numerical scale from zero (0) to ten (10), with whole and/or half points. The pass mark for each type of exam is five (5) and higher. Those who failed the elective course exams have the right to either repeat the course or replace it with another elective course of their choice.

No student has the right to attend the examination of a course for which he/she has not previously registered in the current semester of his/her studies, nor to a teacher other than the one provided for his/her department (in the case of courses with more than one department).

Score Improvement
The Senate of the University of Patras, in application of the provisions of the current legislation, has approved a regulation that provides for the possibility of re-examination of students in courses in which they have already been successfully examined and wish to improve their grade. The regulation concerns exclusively the compulsory core courses of the current semester of study of the student and not elective courses nor compulsory core courses from previous semesters. Students who wish to improve their grade according to the above, submit a relevant application to the Department Secretariat, on the dates announced, in order to re-examine during the September period in the courses in which they wish to improve their grade.

Ethics Issues
The undergraduate student when conducting a course or laboratory examination:

  • He/She must not copy, provide or seek help from his/her fellow students.

  • They must not use any other means, except those that have been permitted and specified by the instructor. In particular, upon entering the examination room, they are not allowed to have mobile phones, electronic means of transmitting information, etc. with them.

The undergraduate student should:

  • Not to indulge in plagiarism, i.e. using or drawing ideas from the works of other authors, without clear reference to their work.

  • Not to carry out individual assignments in collaboration with other fellow students.

  • Not to delegate the tasks he has undertaken to be carried out by other natural or legal persons other than himself.

The Department takes very seriously the phenomena of copying, unauthorized collaboration and plagiarism. In the event of copying or attempted copying or collaboration in copying or in forgery or impersonation in exams, following a complaint by the instructor or invigilator, the Department applies the sanctions provided for by its decisions, the University's Internal Regulations and applicable legislation.
