The Undergraduate Studies Program of the Department of Mathematics consists of a set of courses distributed over eight semesters of study in a way that satisfies the temporal sequence and their interdependence. It is structured into three constituent modules:
-
The first includes Compulsory Courses for all students (core). These are 19 courses which offer, on the one hand, the basic methodological tools of knowledge - reference of science, and, on the other hand, an introduction to individual subjects. They are taught during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th semesters of studies.
-
The second section is the Direction Program. At the beginning of the 4th semester of study, students choose the Direction of Studies they will follow. "Directions" are groups of courses that present scientific relevance and orient the graduate of the Department of Mathematics towards one of the diverse aspects - applications of mathematical science. In each direction, there are 6 specific courses that students are required to choose. Although the degree granted is unified, that of Mathematics, each graduate is granted a certificate in which the direction of his studies is specified. The Department of Mathematics of the University of Patras supports the following five Direction of Specialization Studies:
-
GENERAL direction
-
APPLIED MATHEMATICS Direction,
-
Direction THEORETICAL MATHEMATICS,
-
Department of COMPUTER SCIENCE & COMPUTER MATHEMATICS,
-
Direction STATISTICS - PROBABILITY THEORY, OPERATIONS RESEARCH.
-
Finally, there is the section of Free Elective Courses, courses that offer the opportunity to expand the knowledge of our graduates in general education, foreign languages, acquiring skills from other departments of the University of Patras, deepening in interdisciplinary topics, etc. By choosing 11 of them, students complete their studies. It is noted, however, that the same Free Elective courses are not offered every academic year.
In addition to the above categories of courses, the department offers the possibility of internships as an optional option for students (see the regulation here) but also for the preparation of a thesis (see the regulation here).
Credit Units (ECTS)
Each course of the Department's curriculum corresponds to a number of teaching units (TUs). TUs are used exclusively for the calculation of the degree grade. At the same time, each course is characterized, in addition to the teaching units, by a number of credit units (ECTS). Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) organize their curricula based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, so that their curricula can be described in a uniform manner and that successful performance can be transferred and accumulated in other curricula of the same or another HEI, at national and European level. Credit units express the workload required to complete a learning activity, such as attending lectures, seminars, assignments, internships, studies and exams, and are attributed to each course and to internships and dissertations. Each academic semester includes educational activities corresponding to 30 ECTS credits (with the workload required of each student during the year estimated on average at 1500-1800 hours of work, i.e. 1 ECTS credit corresponds to 25 to 30 hours of "work"). Credits are awarded to students upon completion of their learning activities and are accumulated with the aim of obtaining a degree: the undergraduate course of study at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Patras consists of the successful completion of an Undergraduate Programme, which includes courses corresponding to 240 ECTS credits (30 ECTS in each of the 8 semesters of study). The transfer and accumulation of credit points are facilitated by the use of ECTS documents, namely, mainly, the Diploma Supplement (issued in Greek and English).
Learning Objectives
The Department seeks to produce graduates of high quality and with training that will make them well-rounded scientists who will be able not only to process and use the knowledge they have acquired, but also to recognize its applicability. The primary goal of the Department is to promote, through scientific research and the pedagogical process, mathematics, so that its graduates have a comprehensive-global picture of it, as well as those resources with which the practical interest of mathematics in the natural, technological, economic and social sciences becomes clear. Infrastructure courses are offered, which cover a wide range of knowledge of mathematical science, but also specialized courses in Theoretical Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Informatics, Statistics, Didactics, Physics and Economics that allow graduates to be familiar with the modern dimensions of mathematical science.
Degree Award
The duration of studies for the acquisition of the DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS is four years. The student completes his studies and obtains the DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS when he has accumulated (at least) 240 ECTS credits within the time frame of his studies, during which he has registered, attended and successfully passed thirty-six (36) courses as follows:
-
Nineteen (19) core courses, which collectively contribute 138 ECTS credits.
-
Seventeen (17) elective courses, which collectively contribute 102 ECTS credits, with the help of which the student must secure at least one (1) of the five (5) mandatory majors of the Department.
The diploma certifies the successful completion of studies and indicates a grade calculated on a ten-point scale with an accuracy of two (2) decimal digits. This grade is scaled to:wellfrom five (5) to six and forty-nine (6.49),very wellfrom six and fifty (6.50) to eight and forty-nine (8.49) andexcellentfrom eight and fifty (8.50) to ten (10). The degree is issued by the department according to the general degree format of the University of Patras. The date of acquisition of the degree is common to all students who obtain a degree at the end of the same examination period and is the date of finalization by the Secretariat of the grades for all courses.
